Declan – One Month Old

I can’t believe a month has past since our sweet baby boy entered our lives. Already Declan’s personality is beginning to show. His current favorite pastime is EATING. We affectionately call him the ‘milk monster.’ He has already developed a love for music, and especially loves when we sing to him. Current favorites include ‘The Wheels on the Bus,’ ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,’ ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ and ‘Tender Shepherd’ (probably given those are pretty much all the children’s songs I know the words to…but I’m learning!). We are so in love with this sweet, smiley, goofy little boy.

This month was full of many milestones and firsts for all of us but here a few that are most memorable:

Declan’s Birth-Day – July 19, 2014 and our lives are forever changed

First car ride – A mere five minutes given we live so close to the hospital, but given the precious cargo, I cringed at every bump in the road and held my breath whenever one of the crazy NYC taxis got too close.

Kells’ Reaction to her ‘new brother’  – Kells was very curious and excited to meet Declan and the adjustment has been seamless. She is especially looking forward to the day he is old enough to play fetch. In the beginning Kells got as little sleep as me, dutifully waking up at every cry or whimper and monitoring his feedings and diaper changes. And the first time she saw me burp him, being very sensitive to anything she considers ‘rough housing,’ she came rushing over full of concern. Now, he can be exercising his lungs inches from where Kells is laying or I can be firmly thumping on his back to get out a particularly stubborn burp and Kells will not so much as raise her head!

First pediatrician appointment – Declan’s first doctor’s appointment was at one week old. He was so good for both the nurse and the doctor – all smiles. As new parents we came prepared with a list of questions, from the typical ‘How often should he nurse?’ to ‘Are you sure his pinkie  finger should be able to stretch that far? (Answer: Pinkie is perfectly normal). Yes we have become ‘those’ parents. It is hard not to worry about every little thing!

Spontaneous Sleep Smiles – Loves these. Declan will be sleeping peacefully and break out into a huge grin or belly laugh. Sweet dreams for a sweet boy.
